We see education and research as a fundamental condition for us to break out of thinking and behavioural patterns which keep us in a perpetual state of repetition.

We want to give ourselves the skills that allow us to analyse and respond to the reality that surrounds us.

We want to open a space in which to apply rigorous "academic" treatment, to issues which the institutions ignore for lack of market value.

We need an autonomous space for in depth research and education, a space working within a network of spaces such as:

• University of Openess
• FreeUniversity of Los Angeles
• Manoa Free University
• Toronto Anarchist Free University
• Informal University in Foundation
• Unilibre de Chile

We are creating a space where theoretical analysis and street know-how are on the same level. Only a mix of the constant survey of our environment, taking in all of its contradictory details, an in depth theoretical analysis, and the development of technical skills, creates the kind of knowledge that interests us, a kind of knowledge that allows us to intervene in our reality.

"Study blocks" already in the works:

• play to win - long term strategies, branding and PR applied to social change.
• feminism and sex toy construction - theoretical-practical meetings where sex-toys are constructed and identities deconstructed.
• free-software tools - geared towards use in social movements
• the medicine chest - natural medicine, mental an physical health and balance. A cabinet and also a growing archive and research group.
• precarious instinct and pirate practices -precarity and subconscience, hacking the social and the technological, with new forms of resistance.
• Urban PhysCulture - practices for exerciseing the public space – Development of a specific method of learning based on one’s own experience of interaction and body experimentation in the urban environment. Raw material, unprocessed and information acquired first hand will be used.
• interferences – annoying technology – Introduce and teach (while we learn) technology that allows us to interact with the physical environment in order to create interferences in the conquered public space.
• unproductiv / Cellulose - theoretical-practical workshop about the industrial paper production. Processes from macro-micro, global-local, productive-unproductive.
• artivism and community - CCD, Community Cultural Development uses art in order to generate social and personal changes; art belongs to us. And, naturally, to enjoy art and creativity in community.
• unproductiv / Workshop of Nothing - techniques and meetings in order to obtain together the impossible: to do nothing.

We are opening a space where experiments in teaching and learning share space with more traditional educational styles.

An open space for playful experiments: classes where derivas and direct action intermix with the writing and reading of theoretical texts.

Classes where the compiling of archives can convert into an organically growing body of knowledge.

Gatherings where craft and art are combined with a lecture about their geopolitical context. And anything else you would like to propose.

Everything in UP is subject to experiment and play. Starting with the way the organization is structured.

It is for that reason that we see the creation of informal social spaces (such as a cafeteria) as an important part of the learning process. it is in these spaces where the seeds for the constant renewal of the project are sewed.

La UP esta abierta para proponer todo tipo de conocimientos no catalogados, raros que no se pueden encontrar en ninguna Universidad oficial.

Universidad Pirata is constructed in a decentralized (but orderly) way, based on thematic "blocks", research groups and other formats.

Each group or block is self-managed, making sure of constant good communication with the rest.

The "blocks" that are already in the works are those described above. We invite you to propose others or participate in any of the existing ones.

Universidad Pirata was imagined during weekly meetings that happen every Wednesday at 9pm. These meetings are held around a little table on the sidewalk in front of Miles de Viviendas, a squatted house and social center, located in Joan de Borbó 11, in the Barceloneta neighbourhood. The UP will continue to be run through these meetings.
